Does chewing in different time lengths change the elasticity of the gum?
Problem Scenario
I chose this type of project because a lot of people have told me that when you chew gum for a long time
it gets harder, and I noticed that too. Other people told me that when you chew it for a long time I gets more
loose, I noticed that too. So I wanted see who was right and so I could be the one telling everyone the actual
right answer.
Specific Question
How dose chewing effect the elasticity of gum?
Hypothesis
Over the amount of time will the gum get harder?
Graph of Hypothesis
Variables
Independent Variable:
How long.
Dependent Variable:
To pull gum.
Variables That Need To Be Controlled:
Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation
General Plan
I will need to have people chew the gum for a cretin amount of time.
When the time is over, I will get the Dual-Range Force Sensor (gum puller).
I will attach the gum puller, poll the gum and see the maximum force in the gum.
Then when I have the maximum force, I record the force in my notebook.
Potential Problems And Solutions
One potential problem(s) we could have is when I pull the gum it would be gross even with the gloves
on because I'll have to touch a pencil and when I don't have gloves on the germs will come
on my hand because I wont have gloves on. I'll have people chew the gum they were chewing so they wont move
the germs around from one area to another.
Safety Or Environmental Concerns
I had people wear gloves and I had them pull their own gun and when I pulled it I will wear a pair if gloves.
Experimental Design
Number Of Trials: 9
Number Of Subjects In Each trial: 3,6
When data will be collected: After the time is up for the time the people
had to chew the gum
Number of Observations: 9
Where will data be collected?: The data will be collected in my notebook.
Resources and Budget Table
Poster Board
$5.99
Hubba Bubba (4 in a pack)
$2.69
Mint Eclipse

Colored Markers
$1.99
Background Research
I know that all gum is different and that you have to know what is in the gum.
To have accurate data you will have to know what you are doing and not just playing with the equipment.

Detailed Procedure
I had to buy a couple packs of gum.
When I got to school I set up my Duel Range Force Censer.
I got a couple of people and they had to chew the gum for a cretin amount of time.
Once they were done chewing I would put the gum on the Force Censer and pull at a steady pace.
After the gum is pulled i would record it in my notebook.

Data Analysis
In both cases of the data, niether of the graphs got bigger the longer you chewed the gum.
